26th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition – 2018!

It’s nearly time for the 26th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition! Entries will be on display, throughout the Omni Grove Park Inn from Sunday November 25th through January 4th. Enjoy a number of dining and beverage options, and the huge lobby fireplaces, and stroll through to find the winners.

This is a delightful holiday tradition, enjoyed by locals and visitors. See Amazing winning entries in Adult, Teen, Youth, and Child categories. The display commences after the judging is complete, with awards in place. We’ve enjoyed this every year we’ve been here – simply fabulous, and makes for a fun afternoon. See a glimpse, alongside the Dancing Santa in the video below.

There is a $20 parking fee, half of which is donated to Asheville Non-Profits. Uber and Lyft are good options – or on a mild weather day, the ModAvlTreehouse is a 1.5 mile walk away from Grove Park Inn, across Merrimon Ave, and then through lovely neighborhoods.

Chihuly Nights at Biltmore Estate, Asheville

Chihuly Biltmore Asheville ModAvlTreehouse

This summer, the Biltmore House and Gardens will have a large-scale display of Dale Chihuly’s sculptures, placing vibrant colored organic shapes among the stunning Olmsted-designed landscape. May 17 through October 7, 2018.

Daytime viewing is included with standard daytime admission, but I’m sure the most extraordinary way to experience this, will be with a nighttime “by reservation only” ticket. Dramatic nighttime lighting of the sculptures, sunset view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, life music and a wine bar in the gardens – THIS is something WE certainly want to see!

Hope our Mod Asheville Treehouse guests will also have a chance to enjoy this unique display. Totally romantic!

Glamour on Board: Fashion from Titanic the Movie at Biltmore

Titanic fashion Biltmore Marian Yeates

More than 45 Academy Award winning period costumes from the 1998 movie Titanic will be on display at the Biltmore Estate, February 9-May 13, 2018. The film costumes brought to life the extravagant and elegant wardrobes of travelers such as the Vanderbilts in the early 20th Century. This first large-scale exhibit of Titanic film fashion is even more interesting, considering the Vanderbilt’s near connection to the Titanic tragedy.

George and Edith Vanderbilt had secured first class passage on the maiden voyage of the Titanic, but for some reason, changed their sailing and left a week earlier on Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympic. Their luggage and a servant who sailed with it, were lost at sea.

See Explore Asheville’s article and the Biltmore Estate website for more information. Many thanks to Dr. Marian Yeates for the special event photograph.

Paths to Creative Retirement – Asheville Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

looking forward to retirement OLLI Paths to Creative Retirement Asheville

The next Paths to Creative Retirement session in Asheville is scheduled for April 20-22, 2018, on the UNC Asheville campus,  a mile from the Mod Asheville “Treehouse”. A second offering of this seminar will be August 24-26, 2018.

Paths to Creative Retirement is primarily focused on lifestyle issues, what one retires TO, and how to discover an experience of retirement with self-awareness. Learn how to see yourself beyond being defined by your career. Some participants are already retired, while others are thinking and preparing forward, and may still expect to work for a few more years. The ModAvlTreehouse is well suited to teleworking while exploring Asheville, for a week or two before or after the weekend seminar.

Asheville Restaurant Week, Jan 15-26th

Be sure to check out Asheville Restaurant Week. The linked guide has all of the participating establishments and their offerings to this most tasty event. The event is actually set up for January 15-19, and January 22-26,

I’ve only been able to be in town for a portion of this event in recent years, but I expect we Asheville Space Ship Girls will fully participate in samplings about town, once we’re fulltime residents. The countdown has commenced…

Welcome

Mod Asheville Treehouse Spaceship Girls

Welcome to our site. Please take some time to look around, and come back to check  Our Asheville Guide for updates in the coming months.  It will take time to capture and post all of our favorites, plus near-term “what’s happening”, dining recommendations, and tips for living local for a month, etc.. It will be a labor of love to put together what I’d want to  share as timely information in a concierge-like, and yet neighborly manner. I want to make this a useful ongoing information source, as you consider your plans to stay with us (or just in the area, if our place is already booked, or doesn’t quite fit your needs at this time).
