Avenue M, Dining in North Asheville

Avenue M restaurant walkable from Mod Asheville Treehouse

The best description of Avenue M can be found on the restaurant’s website: “Creative, casual fare prepared using locally sourced ingredients and served in a relaxed atmosphere.” Too true.

We’ve often dined at Avenue M, which is down the road from our N Asheville home. It’s a good half-mile walk from the ModAvlTreehouse (with a bit of a huff and puff back uphill afterwards – but it’s not bad). The neighborhood vibe makes it feel like our “Cheers” – where everyone knows your name. Teri (co-owner/sometimes host) and a couple of their staff have become friends. So we were pleased for their success in the MountainXpress 2017 Best of WNC rankings: 1st for Restaurant In North Asheville, 1st for Neighborhood Bar – North, 1st for Pet-Friendly Restaurant, and 3rd for Restaurant That Gives Back To The Community.

The standard menu is nicely varied, with a daily special list (often posted on their FB page). I can’t imagine most folks not finding something they will truly enjoy!

Teri’s husband is also her co-owner and Avenue M’s head chef. He prepares daily variations of a seared scallops appetizer, which paired with almost anything on the menu makes a great meal. Though I miss the lamb burger that was once regularly featured, the Avenue M Deluxe Burger is one of my favorites in town. I’ve had some wonderful pasta dishes, always enjoy Sunday brunches and their homemade salad dressings are sensational! I highly recommend the Blue Cheese Balsamic and Champagne Vinaigrette, but, in my opinion, Avenue M’s Basil Vinaigrette is the best! Teri makes a seasonal variety of cheesecakes, so save room for dessert!

Avenue M has also had a great impact as an active and generous part of the N Asheville community. Teri and Greg have made some wonderful improvements to their building, since opening in 2010. We’ve watched as the dog-friendly porch evolved as a great year-round space, enclosed and heated for winters, with the upgrade to retractable windows opened for warmer weather. We enjoy the art display on the south-facing exterior wall along Gracelyn Avenue, which usually includes a panel from local elementary school kids.

As a successful and fun eatery, Avenue M does get busy, and I’m sure reservations are appreciated. But, Teri and her staff usually have flexibility for us to catch a great meal within reasonable wait-times, and we’ve comfortably dined in the bar area, as well. If you’re staying at the ModAvlTreehouse, you’re not the typical weekend vacationer, so you may be ideally situated to enjoy some mid-week specials that the locals enjoy, like Wine Wednesdays and Martini Thursdays. But, whenever you are in the area, I recommend you give Avenue M a try!
